CHAPTER 17

My defiant search for Max begins with me running a dozen miles through Central’s underground Aero tunnels in an effort to clear my head. I close my eyes, fists gripped loosely near my rib cage, and I run, steady and strong, letting the cool air of the tunnels fill my lungs over and over again. I visualize every place I’ve already searched for my brother—the last-known residence of every villain he’s had depowered, all of his favorite human restaurants and places. I had even searched a porter camp in Tanzania on a whim. Since Max has been gone this long, it’s clear that Felix doesn’t want him to be found yet.

Nova follows me for several miles. She hasn’t said anything since I heard her slip out of our front door a few moments after I did, so I don’t acknowledge her. But one question bothers me as I run: Did she come on her own, or did Dad make her?

I run with my head high, taking the larger tunnels that lead toward the eastern side of the country. The probability of Max hanging out in one of these well-used tunnels in the heart of Central is exactly zero. Zero to zero. Nil. I let out a massive breath of air, feeling my body shudder under the weight of all this anxiety and anger.

I slow down. My footsteps go from an insane blur underneath me to a steady pounding against the concrete below. I can hear Nova’s steps now, feel the intensity of her power as she closes the distance between us. Without a warning, I spin around, hands gripped at my sides.

“Why are you here?” My words are venom. Her flawless face softens, taking me in as the chest-heaving, anger-fueled twin sister she never asked to have.

“It’s not true, you know.” She slows to a walk, stopping just far enough away to stay untouchable. If I launched toward her, she’d know in time to stop it.

I breathe in deeply, teeth clenched. I don’t want to talk to her, but now she’s got me too curious to ignore her cryptic words. “What’s not true?”

“I would tear the world apart to find you.” She is unflinching in her honesty.

I let out a breath. “Why is no one tearing the world apart for Max? He is a much better Hero than I am. He’s worth the effort.” Warmth fills my eyes. The pain of losing Max is a boulder in my stomach, weighing me down, choking me, until I can barely let out a whisper. “Why isn’t anyone looking for him?”

Nova’s hand is on my shoulder. “We’re looking for him.”

I lift an eyebrow. A chill passes through the tunnels, blowing my dark hair behind my shoulders. Nova’s blonde locks are still in a braid down her back. “I’m sorry I doubted you,” she says. Her fingers squeeze on my shoulder, and I look down at her hand, an identical copy of mine, reassuringly rigid against my Hero suit. “Just because I can’t feel Max doesn’t mean he’s gone.
